Oscar Nominees Announced, Reminding Us There are Actual Awards to be Handed Out and Not Just Seth MacFarlane Being Funny

This morning, Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards. You can read the full list below. Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln led all films with 12 nominations, Ang Li’s Life of Pi received 11, while Silver Linings Playbook and Les Miserables garnered 8 each.
.
A few observations: The Academy goes with Christoph Waltz over Leonardo DiCaprio for Best Supporting Actor (personally, I think they made the right choice). Jennifer Lawrence stars in both a teen blockbuster cashcow (The Hunger Games) AND a serious drama that nets her a Best Actress nomination (Silver Linings Playbook). And Adele releases only one song, and it just so happens to be nominated for an Oscar. Pretty good for a down year in which she was supposed to be recovering from surgery. The biggest snub? Probably Ben Afleck as Best Director for Argo. Nevertheless, 2012 was a pretty good year for Afleck as he’s just about completely shed the whole Bennifer punchline from the mid 00s and become one of the more respected actors/directors working in Hollywood today.
