Kristen Stewart may be a former child and teen star (Catch that Kid/Twilight) … but there’s nothing childish about her role in her new film. And 22-year-old KStew is catching a lot of heat for it from a conservative media group.
.
At the center of the controversy is a cinematic adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s novel “On the Road,” which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.
.
A certain irate member of an organization called The Culture and Media Institute is complaining about ‘On the Road’ scenes in which — according to reports — Kristen, who plays a 16-year-old, engages in a threesome and does a few other naughty things, more specifically to two men.
.
“The movie industry has a twisted affection for making raunchy films that use and abuse former child stars,” Dan Gainor of the Culture and Media Institute told RadarOnline.com.
.
“How will parents who took their daughters to see the Twilight movies explain [her actions in the film]?” Gainor asked.
.
“It is irresponsible of Stewart and manipulative of Hollywood bosses to deliberately try to destroy any sense of decency these actresses might have taught young people.”
.
Gainor went on to say that Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus have all fallen off the innocence wagon in recent years, and have become negative role models for young people.
.
“But it’s not just them,” he went on to say. “It’s a common theme from actresses like Elizabeth Berkley from ‘Saved by the Bell’ who appeared in the tawdry ‘Showgirls’ or Anne Hathaway who went from every girl’s dream role model in the ‘Princess Diaries’ to a nude scene with Jake Gyllenhaal in ‘Love and Other Drugs’.” (Clearly he’s NEVER seen her in ‘Havoc’)
.
Gainor didn’t stop there. He went on to attack Jessica Alba — who is now married, with two children.
.
“Then there’s Jessica Alba,” he said, “who grew up from appearing in the TV show ‘Flipper’ to a starring role in the sick and abusive ‘The Killer Inside Me.’”
.
(We’re trying to be neutral here, but really? Who the hell does this Gainor dude think is? What does he consider culturally acceptable media for teens, The Wiggles?)
.
“All we’ve learned here,” Gainor concluded, “is that parents should tell their children that the time when most in Hollywood are truly acting is when they are acting decently.”
.
Meantime, Kristen said about filming the scene in question with Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley.
.
“I wanted to do [the scene]“ she said. “I love pushing. I love scaring myself. I’ve always wanted to get as close to an experience as I could.”
.
WIll your opinion of Kristen Stewart change because she plays a less-than-chaste character in her new film? How do you feel about her embracing more mature roles, and at what point do you think it’s OK for an actress (or actor) to do so? And most importantly, do you actually feel like you should be doing something just because you see a young, pretty, cool Hollywood actress do it? Are you really going to have a threesome after you see ‘On the Road’? (We doubt it, but you tell us.)
