Independent Music Awards Spotlight
9th IMA Submission Spotlight: Skip-Dawg
ARTIST NAME: Skip-DawgHOMETOWN/CURRENTLY BASED: Havertown, PAINFLUENCES: Talib Kweli, Run DMC, LL Cool J, Jadakiss, Jaheim, Edgar Allen Poe, Music Soulchild, Guster, Wyclef, TICAREER HIGHLIGHTS: My most recent album, We Will Rise, came after a two-year hiatus from music due to surgery on both of my lungs. I went through an intensive physical rehabilitation just to return to a normal life, and to have come through that and then put together an album that I am proud of has been pretty rewarding.I SUBMITTED TO THE INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS BECAUSE: There aren’t many places where unsigned artists can get such rewarding recognition. I also like the fact that whether nominated or not, my music will get a fair and honest shot from the IMA staff and judges.I’M PROUD TO BE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST BECAUSE:
My fan base is genuine. They like my songs or my story, or both, and they are unconditionally on board. That is a cool feeling.WHAT’S NEXT :
I am pretty excited to be currently filming a music video for my song “Make a Miracle Happen.”SUCCESS = This might sound cliched, but if I can keep making new music and recording new songs and albums, I will be pretty happy.WHAT MAKES MY MUSIC STAND OUT:
I am a white rapper who grew up in the suburbs and graduated from Princeton. I’ve been through five major lung surgeries and terrible battles with chronic pain due to nerve damage from surgery. The blessed life I was born into juxtaposed with the gritty path I have at times walked created a story that has connected with fans in a way I never expected and I am immensely grateful for that.WHERE I TOUR:
I do about three shows a week throughout Philadelphia and New York. I am excited to be opening for some college football games (at Temple University) and NBA basketballs games (for the Sixers) this fall and winter. The easiest way to catch my show schedule is here: www.facebook.com/skipdannMY FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY: Fluid Nightclub, Philadelphia. This is the rawest, most underground spot to find live hip hop in Philly. The crowd here is all real music fans which makes performing there a lot of fun. -
