  • Biografia

DSTR (pronounced DēStär), entered the world of music at age five when his parents introduced him to a Martenot method class at École de Musique Sainte-Croix (now "École de Musique de Saint-Laurent", situated in the music pavilion of cégep de Saint-Laurent) for a year. Five years later, he started piano courses (still at École de Musique Sainte-Croix), but had to put a hold on them after three years because he broke his right wrist in a skateboarding accident. A year later, at 14 years old, fueled with Flea's funk, Sid Vicious' attitude, Maestro Fresh Wes' energy, and Metallica's roar, he began electric bass courses. DSTR also flirted with the upright bass for a month, but pursued with the electric bass for two more years before attending Cégep de Saint-Laurent in the music program. During his years there, DSTR got slowly overwhelmed with the technicalities and seriousness of the program, and all the fun gradually disappeared. To make matters worse, he increasingly got more into Hip Hop, and felt like the program didn't offer him what he needed. DSTR was, and still is hooked on Hip Hop. Since he can remember, the production of the Beastie Boys, the Beatnuts, DJ Evil Dee, DJ Premier, DJ Scratch, Digable Planets, Domino, Dust Brothers, Erick Sermon, E-Swift, Havoc, Kemo, Maestro Fresh Wes, Muggs, No I.D., Prince Paul, Q-Tip, Redman and RZA, entertained and fed his desire of making Hip Hop music. Having an electric bass, a cheap half-broken electric guitar, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, an actual drum kit (belonging to his friend), two amps and a few headphones used as microphones, his parents' basement became a jam session spot for a few years. But after finishing with difficulty his DEC, DSTR put a hold on music all together, and completed another DEC (at Cégep du Vieux Montréal) and a bachelor's degree (at UQAM) in graphic design. Since then, he has been a full time independent graphic designer ( http://www.chris.lafacade.com/ ). However, after looping Madlib's, Oh No's, J Dilla's, and Erick Sermon's music non-stop for a few years, DSTR actually dreamt he bought a MPC. A couple of weeks after the dream, he bought a MPC 1000 and a couple of Technics 1200 on boxing day. With the help of his newly acquired equipment and his vinyl and CD collection, DSTR started making music again at 30 years old. In December 2009, he finally released the album he always dreamed of making. The second album is in the works.
