Current mood:
relieved
Yes, I finished the book....sorta. Saturday, I dedicated to getting Jaywalking to Demonspace finished. The rough draft, that is. Got up at around 8am, had coffee, read email, then decided to stop piddling around and get the darn book done. There were only two scenes left to do...there couldn't have been any problem with that, right?
Riiiiight.
Six hours later I take a deep breath, and lean back, proud of myself. It was perfect. A master piece. (a rough draft to be honest- but hey, it was done.)
But still! I'd finished the darn book that I'd planned to have done at the end of Jan. Then March. Then April...May...June...AND NOW July. Yeah, what had started out as a short story has close to 50,000 words.
About 30 seconds after I take that proud breath...my laptop says, "POING!!!!" And decides to go night night. I blinked. Then looked around at the charging cord...oh, it had come out. I plugged that sucker back in. Pushed the power button and felt relief as the bright blue lights on the keyboard lit back up. ---For all of about .05 seconds.
No. Let me try again,
.05 seconds later it's dark again.
No. No. THIS. IS. NOT. HAPPENING.---cause I finished the book.
.05 seconds later--nada.
No. No, no, nonononononononoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeppers, I think the poor thing has gone to the great electonic dump in the sky.
Sooooooo....after calming down....and calling someone to reassure me that all will be well. (Okay, I was only so-so calm.) Then a plan formed...get old tower unit out of storage---then make another two rounds of trying to turn the laptop on again--nope...05 seconds, then major FAIL.
And no...the hard drive does not interchange with the kids' laptop. I now know that for a definite fact. Acers and HP's just don't mix. New plan formed involving the PC repair place and praying he could pull the file off of the hard drive.
So, now it's Monday---and the computer guy is a god among computer guyz everywhere. I don't care that after despartely trying to find the file, it turned out that there was no saved copy. He found a temp file with almost all the data!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who-Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now folks, the moral of that story is-----
Look for Jaywalking to Demonspace in October?
Yes.
And?
Oh, yes! Always, always, always remember to do backups and keep your auto save at frequent intervals.
Here's hoping your weekend was a bit less interesting than mine, LOL.
